Not to sound like a broken record, but it’s been another slow news week. The only piece of news announced this past week was having only aired four episodes The Equalizer from CBS has been renewed for a second season. This is fantastic news was I have loved it since it’s first episode and I am looking forward to seeing more for this great show.

And that’s this weeks news any day now the flood of news will come it’s just a matter of time when we begin to know what next season will look like.

but don’t worry as soon as I know I will post about it on Instagram and added to the upcoming weekly post.

I Have Been Watching

Penn & Teller: Fool us S7 E22 “P&T got the finger.”

The CW - Comedy/Game-show/Mystery

Fool Us.jpg

When this show first started in the UK, I was worried they would give away all the magic secrets. Still, luckily they used a lot of code and insider words to keep the magic alive. After a couple of series, the show was cancelled. But unbeknownst to me, the show had been picked up in the US by the CW network, who loved the show so much they renewed it for another season, five-seasons later, and it’s still as good as it was at the beginning.

In the recent season, they have been clever in dealing with all the travel restrictions. They could have just used people living in the US, or they could have done the best of replaying some of the best acts from the past. Instead, they have to get the international acts to film their trick beforehand and then show that to Penn & Teller before brining down a screen to interview them.

As someone who is not massively into magic, I enjoy this show for different reasons than why most people do, and that’s for the will they figure out how the trick was done.

Every so often, the best scenario comes up, and that’s the times when Penn & Teller believe they know how the trick was performed only to be told that not how it’s done. The look’s on their face’s when they are told no, that’s wrong, or yes, they can inspect an item used in the trick only to be none the wiser is just perfect TV.

In something that’s only recently been used is the judges, something I feel is an excellent addition to the show as sometimes the acts ask for more information from Penn to determine if they know how the trick was done. So being able to ask people who are told how it’s performed and can hear everything Penn & Teller discuss gives the acts a fair chance.

The Voice S20 E3 “The Blind Audition part 3.”

NBC - Game-show, Music, Reality-tv

The Voice.jpg

What makes The Voice stand out for the other Singing shows is that the whole format has been planned so that they can get A list of musicians on the show without interrupting their regular routine. Unlike shows like Idol or X-factor, The Voice would film for a couple of days in one location, and they would give them 5+ episodes just for the Blind auditions. Then they would do the same for the Battle rounds. So for maybe a week and a bit’s filming, they could get 8+ episodes out of it.

Another difference between The Voice and similar shows is they focus more on the incredible talent and eliminate the others during auditions done behind the scenes.

Like most competition shows, they have to add bit’s along the way to keep the show fresh, some have been great additions, and some have only lasted one season. The Block button’s addition is a clever way of showing just how much a coach wants and artist on their team. And can also make for some of the funnier bits of the first few shows. But in season 16, they added the new Cross Battles where one coach would challenge another with only one artist advancing to the next round. Thus, the teams ended up being uneven, which was something l liked about the show as each team started and ended with the same amount in each round.

Like most things in America, they have to do it bigger. So, for one thing, they make two seasons a year and not only can the coaches us their Block button and also give a pitch as to why an artist should join their team, but some of the coaches started giving their team gifts. This ranges from a team jacket to a bobblehead, an improvised song, to a notebook.

Being a massive fan of The Voice as a format throughout the year, I would watch five series. Them being The Voice UK, The Voice Kids UK, The Voice US x2 and The Voice Australia. Having seen many versions and differences, I can see some ideas that I would love to see in other versions.

First, The Voice US needs to switch from doing two seasons a year and make one of them a Kids version. They don’t have to have the same coaches. This is an excellent way of getting younger coaches onto the show and doesn’t love shows with kids. Just watch an episode of Masterchef Junior.
Another addition that would be great for both The Voice US and UK would be to have a duo take a spot in one of the red chairs. In Australia, they started with Joel Madden and then a few seasons later, he was joined by his brother Benji. I could see Blake and Gwen teaming up to create a winning team.
And my final suggestion is the all-star twist. This addition allows former artist another chance to win. They have done this in Australia and have now added international all-stars. When everything gets back to normal, they could get singers and even winners from other countries to try and with The Voice US.

The Neighborhood S3 E11 “Welcome to the dad band“

CBS - Comedy

Neighborhood 2021.jpg

Whenever a show is renewed, I always enjoy the current season a little bit more. I believe this is because the worry that it’s not going to get a proper ending is taken away.

So in the most recent episode of The Neighborhood, Dave needed a new singer for his band who are due to play Grover’s school fete. In steps, Tina, a once aspiring singer who takes the band a little too seriously. When the other band members are no longer having fun, Dave has to find a way to remove Tina from the band without hurting her feelings. After consulting with Calvin, he offers up the idea of making Tina think that leaving the band is her idea.

Before one of the bands practise sessions, Dave tells Tina that he feels the band is holding her back and would be better without them. This suggestion doesn’t go as planned as he responds with the idea that she and Dave leave the band and continue as a duo. But after coming clean that she’s out of the band, it affects their friendship until Calvin and Gemma take things into their own hands and force them to settle there fight.

Recently The Neighorhood has had some hilarious episodes. This one is not one of them; that’s not to say it was terrible. It just that they have set the bar relatively high as of late. Hopefully, they can return to their recent form, and we can just chalk this one up to filler.

The Masked Singer S5 E1

FOX - Game-show/Music/Reality-TV

Season 5.jpg

This week another one of my fav shows returned to help round out my week’s TV schedule. Like The Voice, they have started to change things up. This season, they have added the Wild Card twist. Where a wildcard contestant can take the place of another participant, I’m not sure exactly how this is going to work. Still, if a wildcard is unseating another mask, I can see episodes where we get two revels in one episode.

All we know about this seasons layout is there are two groups of five contestants. It looks like they will alternate between them until they can merge them and then add in the wildcards.
Another addition to the show this season is Cluedle-Doo, who’s there to give extra clues as to who’s behind the masks. This is also someone famous who is also under a mask, but the panellists don’t get to see or hear what they have to say.

In the first episode, we got to see a Masked Singer first as the Snail was reviled be “Kermit the Frog.” I loved having Kermit in the competition. It was not someone I even considered could participate and now opens up the pool of possible participants even wider.

With The Masked Dancer recently finishing its first season, I’m hoping it gets renewed for a second so that we can get a Masked Singer/Dancer crossover.

Knowing that this is now some whole weird universe, I’m currently trying to develop another Masked show to add to this world. The best I have got at the moment is The Masked Actor, where all the masked contestants perform a murder mystery, and each week one is unmasked. Until your left with the murderer

This not only has the fun of finding out who’s behind the mask but also who the murderer is.

Superstore S6 E12 “Customer Satisfaction“

NBC - Comedy

Superstore 2021.jpg

With this being Superstore’s last season, I can see they are pulling out all the stops to make it one of it’s best every. This season’s main story is about all the changes zephra, the company that recently bought Cloud 9, are making. Like the new Zephra policy that any Zephra product can be returned to a Cloud 9 store, this gave us the fantastic scene of Garrett trying to put a return of dialysis machine, a plane propeller, and a giant tire items not typically sold in a Cloud 9, store.

In this week’s episode, Dian & Gleen found out that they have a terrible customer feedback rating. To prevent the store from closing, they asked the employees to get the customers to fill out the online survey and say they had a tremendous in-store experience. After a few of the employees get back reviews, they are taken off the shop floor and asked to work in the warehouse. When Johna discovers he’s one of them, he starts to convince the others they’re better than this.

Meanwhile, Dina discovers that she got a good review because they went above and beyond for a customer. This give’s her the idea to hide some of the stock in the warehouse so when a customer asks if they have any left, the staff can get an get one and say the manged to find the last one in stock. Another way to boost the store customer rating is to tell customers that the toilets are out of order and offer them the staff toilets, but this backfires after Marcus mishears and blocks the customer toilets and flood’s the whole store.

This was one of the best episodes of Superstore I have seen in a long time, and I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen in the final few episodes. All I know so far is that the last episode is going to be an hour-long.

Clarice S1 E4 “You can’t rule me“

CBS - Crime/Drama/Mystery

Clarice face.jpg

After leaving Clarice on the to watch list, I finally had a spare slot to watch this episode from a week or so ago. Now I wish I had not left it so long to watch it. Following the previous episode, the Vicap team is being investigated because a suspect under their watch was murdered.

The team are put on call handling and have to deal with all manner or customer questions. This doesn’t stop Clarice from trying the solve the mystery of how a person dressed as a police officer managed to get into the building and then close enough to drop off the poisoned soda can. This starts to cause problems when she brings her findings to an old roommate helping with the investigation into Vicap.

What’s great about this series is that they seem to be keeping it to one story, not the standard case of the week as shown. Still, the fact this episode was a direct follow on from the previous one and the end of this episode was so crucial that they have nowhere to go but deal with it in the next episode.

And there we have it. That’s another update done. Just a quick reminder, please don’t forget to follow me on Instagram and if you have enjoyed that I have been doing here and want it to continue, please consider becoming a patron.

Once again Thanks and goodnight
